I think that I have possibly spent weeks of my life sitting surrounded by a pile of magazines, armed with a pair of scissors, and cutting out all of the images, articles and words that inspired me and made me want, well, more for my life.
More freedom, more excitement, more adventures. A life less ordinary.
Now, snipping out a few pretty pictures alone isn’t going to change my life, but observing the potential for what could be – that gives me the feeling that anything is possible. And if you know about the Law of Attraction and manifesting, you’ll know that once you feel something, you begin to attract it.
So, what do I do with all of these magazine cuttings? I make vision boards!
What Is A Vision Board?
A vision board is a pinboard or piece of cardboard where you attach all of the things that inspire you and that you want to achieve.
A vision board will give you clarity and focus, and you can make as many of them as you wish. It could be a general board for how you want your life to be, or you could have boards with specific focuses, such as travel, business or style.
Creating a vision board will give you a powerful visual tool to help you to remember and manifest your desires. When used properly (i.e. placed somewhere when you will see it every day), your vision board will motivate you and help to live the life of your dreams.
When I work with my clients, no matter which package they choose, I help them to build their own style vision board. I ask them to show me images not only of their ideal style but also their ideal lifestyle, and often use secret pinboards with them on Pinterest.
Preparing a vision board can give a lot of insights, revealing unexpected information both for my client and for me. It triggers your mind to dream bigger and helps you to get clear on what you really want.
How To Build A Vision Board
Before you head off to the newsstand or fire up Pinterest, first ask yourself these three questions:
What do you want to communicate with your style?
How do you want others to perceive you?
How do you want to feel?
Collect images that represent the way how you want to look - your style icons, people who you look up to, family members, friends, and anyone whose style inspires you. The images don’t just have to be of clothes or other women, either.
If the “new you” would stay at a five-star hotel rather than a budget option, for example, then print out the logo of the hotel you see yourself staying in next time you visit London/New York/Milan.
Make a list of your style goals (for my tips on setting your style intentions, see HERE) and make sure to include all aspects of them on your vision board.
For example, if achieving your dream look involves losing weight, getting fitter, changing your hairstyle, or perhaps getting braces to straighten your crooked teeth, then go ahead and add images of all those activities.
A couple of examples…
You’ve just had a baby, and your body is still heavier than it would usually be. You plan to get back to your pre-pregnancy weight by eating a healthy diet and working out regularly. You also don’t want to fall into looking like a “frumpy mom” – you want to maintain your sense of self and style.
Images for your style vision board:
Things that represent fitness and healthy eating for you.
Photos of women you think are stylish, but who are also moms.
Pictures of clothes and outfits that you like and will work for your new lifestyle.
You’re an entrepreneur. You currently work from your kitchen table and often spending entire days in your pyjamas or yoga pants. But you plan on hitting six figures by the end of this year, and you don’t want to look like a student-y (or worse – sloppy), unprofessional, work-from-home freelancer when your business takes off.
Your style goals include lifestyle goals as well - perhaps a new office (or even just a new desk instead of your kitchen table), or maybe living as a digital nomad while working online and traveling the world.
Images for your style vision board:
Everything that represents the lifestyle you’re setting up for yourself (interiors, mode of travel, bank balance).
Picture of clothes, outfits and accessories that the woman you’re becoming will wear.
Photos of people who are already living your dream.
Your Style – Your Vision
When it comes to style, focus on your main priorities. For example, do you want to be comfortable but still look put together? Or elegant yet casual? Or simply be sexy and feminine. Whatever feels authentic yet challenging.
Gather images that project the feelings of your ideal style/lifestyle - people, outfits, design/interior, places or even colors - anything that inspires you.
Then decide how you want to feel. For example, if you want to feel confident, successful, wealthy, luxurious, relaxed, fancy, powerful, or whatever else, create some graphics with those words. You can also include inspirational quotes and graphics and that are evoking the same feelings in you.
Build Your Board
You can either create a physical board by sticking your images on a pinboard or a large sheet of cardboard, or if you prefer to keep it on your laptop or on your phone to have access to it wherever you go, there are plenty of ways to create it online.
Few platforms I use for creating vision boards/mood boards:
Moodboard App for iPad
Hayhouse Vision Board App for iPhone & iPad
Don’t feel as if you have to complete your board in one sitting – as long as it is inspiring and motivating you; it’s okay for it to be a work-in-progress.
The point of creating your style board is to have a visual reminder in front of you all the time, helping you to generate the feeling of the “new you” that you are in the process of becoming. It will help you to remember your style (and life) goals and focus on your upgraded future and image.
Supercharge Your Vision Board
If you want to boost the success of your style board, you can also establish a daily or weekly mini-visualization to meditate on that new, successful, stylish, confident you that you’re becoming and the exciting, fulfilling life that’s on its way.
