Christmas Style Vol. 1 - Day To Night Looks

At this time of year, we’re looking forward to Christmas and all of the big parties we’re going to, and I’m sure you’ve already started to think about what you’re going to wear!

The festive season brings with it many opportunities for spontaneous drinks with friends, client lunches and special networking events – you never know where the day is going to take you or when you’re going to receive a last-minute invitation!

The key to looking stylish is always to be prepared, and having some outfits planned out in advance means that you go out with confidence, knowing that you look good and ready to accept any exciting adventure that comes your way.

Below I’ve put together some style advice for the kind of occasions that we all have in our diaries between now and the end of the year.

Christmas Style Vol. 1 - Day to Night Looks, Veronika Nemeth

If you’ve been invited to a Christmas client lunch, a business brunch or an awards presentation, you’ll want to dress in something more special than your usual work wear.

Style / dress code

Business Casual

Your Key Items

  • Classic Little Black Dress

  • Dark jeans and a white shirt, or a top and blazer

  • Jumpsuits

  • Co-ords (for example the fashionable “pyjama” style sets, or a matching skirt & top)

  • Classic heels (either boots, ankle boots or pumps, depending on your outfit)

  • Elegant flats (for example, velvet or patent leather loafers)

Black, navy, purple, forest green, burgundy, cream.

Style Notes:

  • If it’s a networking event make sure you check the dress code on the invitation (if any).

  • Check the location in advance so that you dress appropriately (a 5-star hotel will require a more formal dress code, even during the day).

  • If it’s a client lunch consider the style of the person you are meeting, and dress in line with that. Bonus tip: choose the location according to their taste!

  • Overdress rather than underdress.

  • You can never go wrong with a simple, classic look.

  • When it comes to accessories less is always more for the day (classic pearls or simple jewelry with one statement piece works best).

  • Choose natural makeup with nude lips.

  • Wear a simple but groomed hairdo.

Whether it’s the annual family photo or a shoot for your business, it’s important to feel comfortable and look good – because a lot of people are going to see those pictures, and they’re going to be around for years to come!!

Style / dress code

Your Key Items

  • Jeans

  • Chunky sweaters

  • Christmas prints

  • Laid back dresses (for example, shift, A-line, loose sheath)

  • Flat shoes

  • Fun accessories (such as Christmas bauble earrings or even festive hairbands!)

Generally colorful - red, green, white, cream, silver, golden, bronze (avoid black or very dark colors!)

Style Notes:

  • Family shoots (especially with children) usually come across more natural if you opt for slightly more casual outfits.

  • Choose an overall theme – fun / serious / relaxed - and make sure everyone dresses accordingly!

  • Again, choose a color theme in advance and coordinate everyone’s outfits.

  • Show some personality with your clothing & accessories

  • Don’t forget the little details - makeup, hair, nails, grooming - for the entire family!

  • Have fun with makeup, hair, nails and accessories - show off your Christmas print nail design, wear a sparkly eyeshadow, and pop some embellished hairpins in your hair.

  • Fun hairstyles are acceptable!

Drinks parties, networking events, award ceremonies – you’re there to get noticed and make an impression!

Style / dress code

Business casual - with a twist

Your Key Items

  • Little Black Dress

  • Dresses

  • Co-ords (as above)

  • Skirt, blouse and blazer

Preferably heels (boots or pumps, depending on your outfit)

Black, shades of navy, purple, forest green, burgundy, red.

Style Notes:

  • Evening events are usually little more relaxed, so you can show a little more personality with your outfit.

  • Focus on details (add a sparkly belt detail, a striking brooch or embellishment).

  • Wear more accessories - belts, statement jewelry, an eye-catching bag.

  • Always follow the dress code if there is one. Otherwise, go for an elegant, feminine look.

  • Once again overdressed, is definitely better than underdressed.

  • Wear slightly stronger makeup - smokey eyes, bold lips.

  • This is not the place for a ponytail or messy bun, rather freshly washed and groomed hair, ideally with a twist (waves or sleek & straightened).

  • Never forget - you have only one chance to make a first impression, so make it worthwhile!

  • During the Christmas period, it’s more likely that you’ll get invited at the last minute to a spontaneous coffee, client meeting or business lunch, so make sure to leave the house always looking “presentable”, so you’re ready to go!

  • Keep a “survival beauty kit” (makeup, hairbrush, accessories) in your handbag so you can freshen up wherever you are.

  • In winter, shoes, coats and handbag are the most prominent part of your outfit, so make sure to choose them wisely wherever you go.

  • Christmas is the time to sparkle - so put on your best clothes (that you keep for special occasions) every single day!!!

You never know when you might meet a potential client, friend or lover, so make an effort with your appearance even if you don’t have anything planned – you don’t want to miss out on an opportunity to make a good first impression!

After all, as Coco Chanel said, “I don't understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little, if only out of politeness. And then, you never know, maybe that's the day she has a date with destiny. And it's best to be as pretty as possible for destiny.”
