Christmas Style Vol. 2 - Party Looks

It’s Christmas party season (not forgetting New Year’s Eve as well, of course!) – so it should come as no surprise to you that your style brief over the next five weeks is pretty, sexy & elegant with plenty of sparkle, glitz & glamour.

A well-prepared woman is a stylish woman, so don’t leave it until the last minute to plan your outfits for all of those special occasions.

Here’s my guide to being your very best, fabulous self throughout the festive period (and if you’re looking for advice on how to stay chic during more low-key or daytime events, take a look at my blog HERE.

Your Style

There’s only one thing to wear to a party – and that’s a party dress!

However, the party venue, dress code and program will ultimately determine what you wear.

For a dinner party at friend’s house, go for a more laid back look. You can play around with patterns and colors, but try to stick with simple cuts, and stay away from showing off too much cleavage or leg! A shift dress or an A-line skirt dress would work really well.

If the venue is in a restaurant, opt for a more elegant look. Your favorite Little Black Dress (LBD) is a perfect choice, but make sure to dress it up with sparkly statement accessories. A wrap dress is another great option. High heels are recommended, as well as an elegant clutch.

For both of these kinds of events, you could easily recycle and tweak some of the basic items you already have in your wardrobe, but If you’ve been invited to a “real party”, where you plan to dance the night away, it’s time to bring your best game.

Sequins, glitter and dazzle are essential, as is a “sexy” vibe! You’re free to wear bodycon or close-fitting sheath dresses, short hemlines and low décolleté, as well as metallic colors. This is the moment to get your “sparkle” on, and your opportunity to wear things that you don’t usually get a chance to throughout the rest of the year!

Your Fabrics

There’s no need to hold back in your choice of fabrics when dressing for a Christmas party. Go all out in faux fur, velvet, lace and sequins; and stay warm and luxe in silk, wool and cashmere.

Your Colors

If you want to be the center of attention, then this is the perfect time to put on your red dress!

Red is one of the hottest colors of Fall/Winter 2017, so you’ll find many options in the stores for both dressy and more casual occasions.

Not sure about going full-on red? Pair your dress with black to maintain an elegant look, or soften it with cream or white. Red also works well with both gold and silver accessories.
If bright red isn’t really your style, then you could opt for burgundy or wine colors. Luxurious and elegant, these shades complement black, green or navy perfectly.

Deep greens are also big this season, and they are the perfect color for any evening dress. A forest green is subtle and elegant, and usually works very well with darker complexions. For an exceptionally divine look, match with gold accessories.

Navy peony is one of the Pantone colors for the F/W 2017 season, so if black seems too dull, this midnight shade is a great alternative!

And finally, when wear metallics, if not at Christmas? There are so many shades of silver, gold and bronze that there’s one to flatter everyone!

Your Lingerie

Ensure that your bra and panties fit well, give you a smooth silhouette (wear Spanx if necessary!) and don’t show through your dress (either the colour or the imprint), and that your bra straps aren’t showing (not chic!).

You should choose a bra which works specifically with the outfit you are wearing, and gives you the support (or boost) you need. Obviously a strapless or wide-shoulder cut dress will require a strapless bra, but similarly, a low-cut dress may require a cleavage-enhancing bra.

Remember that how you look starts from the inside out, so do not even think about wearing your old and greying jersey knickers – this is the time for your sexiest lingerie, and if you don’t have a set that makes you feel a-maz-ing, then buy one!! (Bonus tip: don’t wait for someone else to buy this for you. You know exactly what you want and what fits you the best. Treat yourself!)

Your Accessories

Everything and anything with sparkle and shine!

Feather and faux-fur details, sequin & diamante embellishments and glitter are acceptable on everything from your hairclips to jewelry, and handbags to shoes! (However, take care not to resemble a walking Christmas tree!)

Always go for the highest heel you can wear comfortably (and can walk in!). For a super up-to-date look, note that sexy pointy toe heels are trendy again!

Your Beauty

Choose a fabulous smokey eye or a sultry dark red pout (never both), lashings of mascara and a sheen of highlighter across your cheekbones.

Glossy hair – either in big waves or a sleek up-do – will make you feel like the star of your own movie.

Be sure to have smooth legs, and well-moisturize any skin that’s on show. For a high-class look, add a small amount of highlighter to your body cream to give your skin a subtle gleam.

  • Don’t ruin your look by throwing on your everyday coat over the top!
