When we talk about style, we mainly think of clothes and fashion. However, beauty and grooming make up a large part of our image.

As such, paying attention to your skin, hair and makeup is essential if you want to be stylish.

If you’ve read any of my other articles, such as “Find Your Style – Find Your Power” and “What Does Your Image Say About You?, you’ll know that when I talk about being “stylish”, I don’t mean merely how we look. Style is about how you feel about yourself and the message that you portray to the world – therefore it’s important that you don’t miss out this step.

Every season I encourage my clients to review their closets to make sure that they have outfits to suit the upcoming weather being cold and/or bedraggled is not chic!!  – and you need to take the same approach to your beauty supplies and regime.

As we transition from summer to winter, the air becomes colder, drying out our skin and hair (as does the central heating in our homes and offices). Our hair color becomes darker, and our skin tone becomes paler.

The face creams, hair products and makeup that you relied on earlier in the year are no longer suitable, and if you carry on using them, you will not see the results you’re looking for, and you may become frustrated or disappointed with what you see in the mirror.

  • A cream cleanser will soothe your skin at the end of a long day battling the elements.

  • Add a pre-moisturizer serum to your regime to give your skin an extra boost.

  • Gently exfoliate every 2 -3 days to get rid of dry and flaky skin.

  • Schedule some self-care time to indulge in a weekly moisturizing masque – don’t forget to include your décolletage.

  • Be sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself and your skin hydrated.

  • Regular applications of a heavy duty lip balm are essential to prevent chapped or dry lips and keep them perfectly kissable!



  • Only wash your hair when necessary to prevent stripping it of its natural oils.

  • Never leave the house with wet hair. Blow dry on a low heat.

  • Protect your hair from breakage due to rubbing against your coat collar by wearing a silk scarf. (Bonus tip: If you’re wearing a pull-on wool hat, wrap your hair in a silk scarf first to prevent frizzy “hat hair”.)

  • Your hair will also benefit from a weekly deep-conditioning masque treatment.

  • If you color your hair, consider changing the shade slightly during the winter months. Soft low lights and warm colors work better with a paler winter complexion.

  • Make sure to book in for regular trims at the salon to keep dry and split ends at bay.


Body care

  • Use a dry body brush every day before showering or bathing to help with your circulation, get rid of dry skin, and banish that “corned beef” look.

  • Don’t have your shower or bath water too hot – this will dry out your skin.

  • Be sure to moisturize your whole body after washing. If you are running short on time, prioritise your lower legs and your upper arms.

  • Keep a tube of hand cream with you at all times and make it a habit to apply every time after you wash your hands, paying special attention to your cuticles. I also recommend wearing gloves whenever you are outside, even if it doesn’t feel particularly cold.

  • Don’t neglect your exercise routine – keeping your body moving will help to keep the winter blues away and prevent a panic when bikini season comes around again!!



  • Check that your foundation, concealer and powder still are working for you – as your tan fades you may find that you find a different tone. You may also need a different formulation, as our skin behaves differently during the winter.

  • It’s time to ditch the bronzer. You might feel as if you need some “glow” at this time of year, but using bronzer on pale skin can look a bit “fake”. Instead, find a blusher which suits your natural coloring and has a light shimmer effect (not glitter!!). You could also experiment with using a highlighter on your cheekbones, especially during the evening.

  • Just as you’re not wearing clothes with tropical prints or in bright shades at this time of year, you should be adjusting your makeup colors accordingly. Keep lipstick and nail colors nude, classic red or in berry shades, and eyeshadow and liner to neutral shades of browns, greys, beige, navy and black.
